Anthracnose/ Lupins

Anthracnose is a serious disease of lupins but now can be treated successfully and therefore should not prevent the U.K farmer from growing lupins. The most common symptoms are lesions on the stem. These tend to be oval shaped and range in size from 0.5cm to 2cm in length. The centre of the lesion contains slimy ooze that ranges in colour from beige to orange and pink. This is the spore mass forming. Lesions cause the stem to bend, resulting in a shepherd's crook appearance. The growth above the bend or crook is usually twisted and deformed and eventually dies. As the disease progresses, similar lesions develop on the pods and seeds. Later infections are mainly seen as lesions on the pods, often causing distortion.
